The Wichita Chamber Chorale will close its 32nd season with Choral Classics: “A Holy Week Pilgrimage.” Performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 27 at West Heights United Methodist Church, 745 N. Westlink, Wichita; and 4 p.m. Sunday, March 28 at East Heights United Methodist Church, 4404 E. Douglas, Wichita.
Following on the heels of its highly successful “Christmas Retrospective,” “A Holy Week Pilgrimage” presents vignettes from the life of Jesus that are especially appropriate for the Easter season. Sections of the program include Teachings, Miracles, Arrival in Jerusalem, Merchants in the Temple, Communion, Denial, Death, and Resurrection.
Works that will be performed include motets by Melchior Vulpius, Antonio Lotti, Olivier Messiaen, and Marc-Antoine Charpentier; sacred works by Heinrich Schütz, Edward Bairstow, Arvo Pärt, Sergei Rachminoff, and Orlando Gibbons; and hymns and spirituals arranged by Alice Parker, Robert Shaw, and H.T. Burleigh. The program concludes with Beethoven’s stirring “Hallelujah” from “Christ on the Mount of Olives.”
The Wichita Chamber Chorale is lauded as Wichita’s premiere choral ensemble. Since 2005 Robert Glasmann has been conductor of the ensemble. Glasmann also teaches at Wichita State University, where he conducts the acclaimed Concert Chorale and serves as musical director of opera. In addition he conducts the adult choir at St James Episcopal Church. Organist and pianist Julie Warkentin accompanies the ensemble.
